Runner of the Week (1) - Spencer Moon and Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel
We’re excited to bring you something new this season. In an effort to continue to support and grow D3XCTF, we felt the next best step would be to bring weekly awards.
Introducing the D3 Glory Days Runner of the Week Award.
We’ll scan results each week for the athletes and teams we thought had the best performance. Some weeks may not be meet winners or those that ran the fastest. We’ll do our best to go beyond what the results show. But some weeks the winners and fastest will prevail.
Joining us today are Spencer Moon from Simpson College and Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel from UChicago.
Spencer Moon kicked off his season with a dominant home meet win. He covered the 6k course in 17:34 which is over a minute faster than last season. You may recall him going for it in the 5k but getting swallowed up by the pack. Moon returns to campus fitter than ever and looks to improve upon is 10th place finish from last year.
Evelyn Battleson-Gunkel has a had a whirlwind of a year in running. The former high school soccer player turned into a runner in college. Last cross country season, she didn't run in the post season. However, she got the hang of it by qualifying for Inoddor Nationals and even made the Mile final. However, a fall ended her indoor campaign and left her with 5 staples. She bounced back quickly to become an All-American in the 1500. Last week, she won her first cross country race and is leading the UChicago team that is eying another podium finish.
