Episode 84 - Monique Newton
After many episodes, we welcome on our first thrower to D3 Glory Days!
Monique Newton grew up in Sacramento, California playing a lot of different sports. Growing up, her mother instilled in her the importance of education and how it can be used to transform her life. There were times when Monique would come home to the electricity or the hot water being shut off. This shifted her focus toward Track and Field as she looked to college as a way to get to that next step in her education.
Once at Oberlin, it took some time to transition to college but Monique was thriving in the ring. She had made her first Indoor National Meet as a Freshman and finished 4th in Shot Put at Outdoors. She credits her athletic success to the seniors at the time for taking her under their wing.
By her Sophomore year, Monique was thriving in the classroom that would later lead to her Ph.D at Northwestern as well as in the ring. She finished runner up in Shot Put Indoors, was learning new events (Hammer and Weight Throw) and that outdoor was her first meet she earned two All-American Awards.
The momentum continued to her junior year when she won a national title in Shot Put, becoming the first woman at Oberlin and on the track and field team to win a National Title. Yet the high didn’t last long as she went on to have her worst National Meet during outdoors. She would rebound her senior year to have two runner-up performances in Shot Put and add another national title to her resume.
